Karine LaBel embodies traditional haitian culture

LaBel is an acknowledged freelance artist, dance choreographer and dance teacher living in Vienna. She sees her artistic contribution in creative personal development through dance and ceremonies. LaBel is Chairwoman of the Association for Austrian-Haitian Cultural Contact Aybobo, she has been a lecturer for traditional haitian dance at the University Sports Institute in Vienna since 2000, and has been teaching at ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival since 2004.

Educational and Professional Background

2023: Certified accompanist for students with school difficulties and disabilities.
2020: Improvement in African dance and percussion at Tilyboo Cultural Training Center, Senegal. With certification from the Republic of Senegal.
2018: Research Project, 1 week led by Jennifer Lacey.
2017: Certified Zumba teacher.
2009/2010: 2 weeks seminar Teacher Teaching Teachers (TTT).
2007: Diploma of Instructor „Nike Rockstar Workout Dancehall“.
1999: 5-weeks seminar in Haiti where she completed dance courses with Vivianne Gautier, the Grande Dame of Haitian dance.
1995: Studied African dance with Georges Momboy in Paris (known in Austria through the Wiener Tanzwochen).
1993: Initiation and deepen practice into traditional Haitian dance in Lakou Souvenance (the most important religious pilgrimage place in Haiti).
1991: Aritistic activities in Paris (France). Regulary dance teacher to children aged from 4-11 for the City of Paris until 1996-
1988: Baccalauréat, Haitian national secondary-school diploma (equivalent Matura/Abitur).
1970: Born in Les Cayes on Haiti.

„L’envers du décor“ is a project which was planned as a concluding event of the „Religious, expressive and ritual culture of the African diaspora“ series of lectures by Prof. Dr. Manfred Kremser at the Institute of Ethnology, Social and Cultural Anthropology, in the framework of which Karine taught on the topic of „Shango/Ogoun/etc. („Voodoo“ in Brazil, Haiti and Cuba“). The idea of the piece is to express Haitian Voodoo rituals on the stage live in the form of dance.
